Recently one of the cellular operators in my area has started support for HSDPA.

As you may be aware, HSDPA stands for a High-Speed Downlink Packet Access and it is a third generation (aka 3G) mobile telephony communications protocol in the High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) family. It is used in Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks and has high data transfer speeds. Maximum speed is limited to 14.4 MBit seconds, 3.6 MBit per second being the most widespread speed.

The good news is that Nokia E90 Communicator, as you would expect from a device of this class, supports HSDPA.

Immediately after I heard the news about HSDPA being introduced in my place, I rushed and got a subscription to test the speeds.

I must say the speed was impressive. The only time I get the same web page rendering and file download with my Nokia E90 Communicator is when I use it in a WLAN. I must note that my operator has started offering unlimited data plan at a fixed monthly fee. This opens practically unlimited horizons in using E90 anywhere, anytime. Think VoIP :)

If your operator does not support HSDPA while a competing does, I highly recommend that you consider switching even if your current operator supports 3G.
